The secret of freedom, courage.  - Thucydides

Yesterday long before sunrise I watched the 55 minutes 2019 documentary 'D-Day at Pointe-du-Hoc' on Amazon Prime.

Training and combat that defies description. You have to see it.

I sent notes to two retired friends, both Marine infantrymen one who went on to be a Navy SEAL, recommending they watch.

That powerful documentary has been on mind.

Such as timing goes, last night I met and dined with a Marine infantryman who fought at Hue City; 24 years after Pointe-du-Hoc. Brutal street fight. Three Purple Hearts during his short time on active duty.

Pointe-du-Hoc was still on mind.

One of the Marines I sent note replied late last evening after digesting what he'd just watched.

Excerpts ...

" ... these men were in the absolute best shape of their lives. Tough training that was realistic. Log drills like I've never seen. The rope ladders were primitive. And that's being kind. Prepared for close combat to the fullest. Able bodied men against able bodied men. The Rangers all better men to the man ... Our leaders today are an embarrassment. I doubt we have units or men today that could do what these men did. Rudder's letter to the mother was particularly touching. His pain evident. All men cross trained on friend and foe weapons ... 15% women? 20% women? Would equal failure. American males today should hang their heads in shame. They are not worthy of breathing the air these men breathed. My God ... it made me feel small."  [LtCol Rudder, CO, 2d Ranger Battalion]

Exactly!

I could expound but no point. Truth best in few words.

What those men did at Pointe-du-Hoc (and elsewhere in the European and South Pacific theaters) to confront and defeat evil is practically unfathomable. Words fail to properly describe.

But oral and written records, film, and most importantly tens of thousands of marble headstones and crosses, here and abroad, stand as testament to their courage.

Early this morning, thinking more about the documentary and last evening's conversation with that Marine who too spilled blood confronting and defeating evil, came a troublesome conclusion.

The offspring of those incredible men are today failing to confront the same sort of evil. In fact, that evil is being embraced; by government (including military), media, business, and an ignorant and stupid citizenry.

Incredible!

Why?

Corruption.

Cash.

Conformity.

Cowardice too.

Watch the documentary.

Better, sit with a youngster (or two or five) and watch and teach them the secret to freedom - courage.

Because the point is there's again well-defended cliff to scale - to confront and defeat evil.

And America (and the world), again, needs real warriors.

They died in war so that we can live in peace. Our debt to them can never be repaid but it must be honored. Our “leaders” today are fooling themselves and not our enemies. We walk on the shoulders of giants. God bless them.

Well put Andy; I've watched before. Amazing what these men did, and how they did it. Today's military? All I can do is laugh when I read where 67% of today's youth cannot qualify for service. Ans I have questions about the other 33%!
