Then, Sir, we will give them the bayonet! - Stonewall Jackson
Yesterday a retired Marine pal asked, "Do you think 2/7 took bayonets?"
Translation: Do you think the 2nd Battalion/7th Marines (based in Twentynine Palms, CA) packed bayonets for their "deployment" to Los Angeles?
Knee-jerk reaction: Of course. But that was tempered in reply: Are you kidding? Someone might get hurt.
As I recall, the bayonet is an armory controlled/issued item. They fix to lug at the end of the service rifle barrel; their purpose close combat (pugil sticks simulate - first taught during recruit training).
From news clips, the violent antagonists have been up close and personal to law enforcement causing minor to serious injury.
Not knowing mission specifics assigned to 2/7 it seems logical the Marines, too, will be up close and personal to the mobs. Otherwise, why employ?
Therefore, bayonets.
But. (And Marines know what that means.)
This morning on X was posted by Dr. Naomi Wolf the following sentence: "If you want to lose your last remaining rights, roll out the US military domestically."
I do not know Dr. Wolf (believe PhD not MD).
What a dumb public statement.
So I took moment to enlighten ...
"Reread the oath of office taken by every elected officeholder, first responder, military member, et al. To point, " ... support and defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic ... ". Furthermore, what about the blatantly obvious distinction between upset citizens differing from illegal attacking invaders (clearly organized, funded, logistically supported, led, etc.) escapes your understanding?"
The oath of office does not restrict the U. S. military to addressing only foreign enemies.
Nor does national defense preclude the President from employing the military on American soil.
In Los Angeles invaders, de facto foreign enemies, roam and obstruct the streets. And, yes, American citizens are carrying on with them, as de facto domestic enemies.
The scope of the problem has overwhelmed police and National Guard.
The Governor of California and Mayor of Los Angeles failed their oath - deliberately - to Constitution, to the people of California and America.
Therefore, a state matter is now federal problem; to include preventing the spread.
The U. S. military is uniquely organized, trained, and equipped to handle such problems - abroad and here.
The problem with sending 2/7 to Los Angeles is a battalion is not enough. Not near enough.
Battalions. Lots of battalions. And units in support. [In Marine terms: MEF (rein) MAGTF(SP) - Marine Expeditionary Force (reinforced) Marine Air Ground Task Force (Special Purpose). Overkill? No such thing in a fight.]
Thousands and thousands of combat armed trained and equipped Marines.
A show of force.
And applied force, as required.
After the movement of 2/7 was announced, a Marine on Facebook posted ...
"I'm sure that the people who really need this PSA aren't going to see my feed, but if anyone thinks it's a good idea to toss a brick at a 2/7 LCpl that's been stuck living in the barracks and raking rocks on S-4 working parties in 29 Palms and has 4 Zyn pouches in his lip and just crushed 2 white monsters ... you may learn things about human nature that you had not planned on learning."
Marine LCpls (Lance Corporal) do not look favorably upon enemies - foreign nor domestic. They know the meaning of their oath sworn.
That is, " ... to support and defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic ... so help me God."
In the words of U. S. Marine Colonel John W. Thomason, "Fix Bayonets!"
As yet, crickets from Dr. Wolf.

We don’t have to worry about this “Wolf” being at the door. Apprehend all and arrest those violently involved. If not U.S. citizens, deport immediately. If U.S. citizens then charge, try, convict and lock up accordingly.
As for the Marines? A bayonet is a component of, not just the Marine’s weapon, but integral to the Marine himself. It’s a package deal.

Yes, Andy, times have changed. I remember guarding the Capitol in 1968 with the drill team from 8th & I, who manned M-60s and their M-1s. Yes, they were their ceremonial rifles, but they were functional; in fact, they qualified every year. Ammo had been issued, albeit not loaded. Were my Marines prepared physically and mentally to "lock and load" ammo and kill Americans if the order had been given? Absolutely. I explained to them their oath they had taken, and they accepted it 100%. There were no "Dr. Wolf's back in the day.
