A headline in this morning's news addressed a deemed racist incident during a hockey game yesterday between the Chicago Blackhawks and visiting Washington Capitals.
In short, while a Washington Capitals player, who happened to be black, sat in the penalty box, Blackhawks fans (race unknown but assumed not black) shouted at him.
By the headline and opening words of the article most any reader would have jumped to the conclusion the "n" word or something as insulting was hurled at him.
Assumption wrong.
"Basketball, basketball, basketball," yelled the rambunctious fans.
Frequency, tone, and full context not reported but so what.
The player, agitated, did something retaliatory towards the fans.
Security ejected four fans.
A probable question ...
Had a white (NBA) basketball player fouled out of a game would heckling fans (assumed not white) yelling "hockey, hockey, hockey" be ejected?
Likely not.
Concluding thoughts ...
Rinky dink.
What the puck?
Horse hockey!
Thicken your skin, citizen(s) - in the absence of civility. Through professionalism, maturity, strength of character, and behavior take the high ground - always. Such admirable personal conduct ultimately shames and tames the crass, crude, and cruel.
Had the Capitals concentrated, been mentally tough, and wore thicker skin victory more likely.
Go figure.
For so failing, Blackhawks 7-1.
"Baseball, baseball, baseball!"
So ends this Sunday morning's color commentary.
