COCKS FIGHT IN SOUTH CAROLINA GAME

COCKS FIGHT IN SOUTH CAROLINA GAME

Fighting is essentially a masculine idea; a woman's weapon is her tongue. Hermione Gingold

South Carolina's state slogan is Smiling Faces, Beautiful Places

Yes, beautiful places. First coming to mind is Parris Island - a spit of land down in the marshy low country - where U. S. Marines, cocks and not, are made. But training fighters is no game so not many smiling faces.

Want beautiful places with smiling faces?

Then the neighboring communities of Port Royal and Beaufort are the places to be - acres green, water aplenty.

So is Hilton Head Island and Charleston and Columbia and Clemson, and all sorts of towns and villes here to there, beautiful places with crowds of smiling faces.

Greenville?

Usually.

But not last night.

Last night the six remaining cocks of the GOP took the debate stage in the gamecock state.

First observation: The CBS set looked like pop art - resurrected from Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In.

Where was Jo Anne Worley and Goldie Hawn? And Arte Johnson who made famous the catchphrase, "Very interesting" and oft times followed it with "but not very funny" or "but stupid"?

Too bad a Nixon masked prankster didn't jump stage and yell, "Sock it to Me" - an antic befitting the evening.

Sock it to one another, at least with tongue, the candidates did.

It wasn't very interesting. Nor was it funny. Stupid surely.

Entertaining?

Absolutely, if fond of fake wrestling.

Who remembers George Becker and Johnny Weaver? And Homer O'Dell?

Last night's operative words from the candidates?

Very and liar.

Most everything was qualified very - very important or very strong or very critical or very capable. Very, very, very, and very.

Seriously?

Liars they called one another.

Seriously?

So, the six cocks, in alphabetical order according to height and hair worst to best...

Mr. Trump
Governor Kasich
Doctor Carson
Senator Cruz
Mr. Bush
Senator Rubio

Who won?

The voters tell us next Saturday night. Until then spin and speculation and senselessness. I choose to abstain.

Thus, last evening I retired thinking we need a rebate debate - bring back Huckabee, Paul, and Santorum.

This morning I've not changed my mind. And over coffee I'm (very) thankful to have been raised a Tar Heel. North Carolina - too a state, though unofficially, of smiling faces, beautiful places. That's not a lie.

In reality, what America desperately needs is a debate show themed 'To Tell the Truth.'

Now that would be, in Arte Johnson's words, "Very interesting."

Alas, the "debates" have debased into what the "media" had hoped for. Starting with the opening assault against Trump in the first Fox/facebook (there's an interesting combo) meeting and continuing downward to what we're seeing now, the Repub's feed into the frenzy. While the two old lefty reprobates are being hurled softballs, the R's keep getting sidetracked into personality squabbles. We have 9 more months of this stuff to go. God help us.
